THE WORK
This position is to support Aviation Safety programs in Owego, NY. to include aircraft production, completions, final assembly and production/development flight test.
Typical tasks of a Flight Safety Engineer may include:

• Perform a variety of flight safety engineering tasks to support development, flight test, operations, production, fleet support and accident investigation for helicopter programs and projects.

• Manages Engineering, Program Management, and other Aviation Safety and Airworthiness groups and key stakeholders to aid safety hazard identification for design and changes to the air vehicle system; hazard analysis; hazard mitigation including assignment of safety requirements to subsystem/components; oversight through hazard control verification; and hazard tracking.

• Develops, refines and tracks metrics to assess the aviation safety culture and operations of the site.

• Coordinates and participates in review boards, self-assessments and audits as an independent safety advocate.

• Lead site level Safety Management System (SMS) initiatives and ensures adherence to all regulatory SMS requirements.

• Supports safety compliance requirements for programs/platforms.

• Liaise with and support Sikorsky legal department in aviation matters.

• Present safety briefings to customer, pilot and maintenance groups.

• Apply scientific and engineering principles, criteria, and techniques to identify and track potential safety hazards.

• Perform safety analyses, conduct safety risk assessments and develop recommendations for risk mitigation.

• Support review of flight and ground test plans.

• Provide safety support to internal Sikorsky flight, test, maintenance and production operations.

• Collaborate with site and enterprise leadership to enhance safety risk management.

• Interface with civil and military customer Flight Safety Officials and ensure compliance with the aviation safety requirements of DCMA INST 8210 and corporate safety policies.

• Interface with the Model Development Safety Committee (MDSC), as directed, to identify flight test safety hazards and approve risk mitigation strategies.
• Ensure adequate risk mitigation and safety oversight for hazardous energy test operations (Laser, Radar, HF, IR etc.).

• Provides backup coverage to other Sikorsky flying sites as necessary.

A level 3 employee is mid-career and typically has 3 to 5+ years of professional experience.

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in engineering, aviation safety or other technical major; or equivalent experience

• Aviation operations, aviation maintenance or quality assurance experience.

• Experience drafting technical reports, including an understanding of aircraft technical terms and the capability to interact with subject matter experts. Must provide accurate, concise and clear factual explanations of complex information.

• Ability to both lead investigations and participate as a team member.

• Ability to develop documents, spreadsheets and presentations utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.

• Maintain proficiency with advancing technologies in the areas of aviation safety, operational procedures and accident / incident investigations.

Desired Skills:
• Desire 5 years industry or military experience that has provided specialized knowledge in several of the following areas:

o Aviation accident investigation
o Aviation operations
o Aviation maintenance
o Aviation safety
o Systems safety
o Human factors
o Safety Management System (SMS)


• Detailed and diverse technical systems knowledge of Sikorsky products obtained through development, testing or operations.

• Experience with technical examinations and component teardowns; familiarity with basic failure analysis methods.


• Experience interacting with domestic and international civil and military investigation authorities.

• Expertise with Flight Operations, Quality Assurance and Health and Usage Monitoring Systems data is highly desired.

• Sikorsky rotary wing aviator and / or engineering, and / or quality management experience on the Sikorsky product line.

• Experience analyzing accident trend data through the use of analytics software.

• Familiarity with military, FAA and international aviation authority regulations.

Ability to Work Remotely: Onsite Full-time: The work associated with this position will be performed onsite at a designated Lockheed Martin facility.
Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Schedule for this Position: 9x80 every other Friday off
Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Washington or Washington DC is $82,200 - $157,500. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate’s final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
Benefits offered: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, 401(k) match, Flexible Spending Accounts, EAP, Education Assistance, Parental Leave, Paid time off, and Holidays.
(Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.

This position is incentive plan eligible.
Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in most major metropolitan areas in California and New York is $94,500 - $178,000. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate’s final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only.
