The Optical Talent Center (OTC) enables new frontiers in visible-light and infrared systems, missile defense, space exploration and much more. Our members integrate authorities across the nation, within Lockheed Martin, our industry partners and leading research universities, into one fast-acting, collaborative group.

We are searching for a Laser Engineer with expertise in the development of solid-state or fiber lasers, amplifiers and nonlinear optical systems and devices. You should have expertise with current state-of-the-art lasers/amplifiers and nonlinear optical materials, and experience with the characterization and optimization of laser and nonlinear optical systems in addition to design and modelling experience of nonlinear optical and laser/amplifier systems. Additional knowledge of related laser-based remote sensing technologies is desired, including coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier/wave optics, beam propagation, and/or atmospheric sciences is desirable.

You should demonstrate effective verbal communication, develop concise and professional technical presentations, and deliver briefings to peers, leadership, and US Government customers. You should be able to work in a classified environment.

Some of your responsibilities in this role will include the following:

• Supporting laser development for projects and programs in the areas of concept development, detailed design, and hands-on laser system build & characterization

• Participating in the engineering development of unique laser designs through design analysis and tolerancing, key component and performance specifications, and development of test methodologies

• Coordinating and supporting the build, alignment, and performance characterization of laser assemblies, including for space-based and airborne payloads

• Deriving specifications for key components and engaging with vendors for procurement

• Participating in program technical Customer milestone reviews

• Guide the work of junior and emerging engineers

A successful candidate in this would typically have one of the following:
• Bachelors degree and 9-15 years of professional experience
• Masters and 7-13 years
• PhD and 4-10 years.

This position is contingent upon the program award expected in September 2024.

Basic Qualifications:
• Experience building, developing and characterizing laser systems.

• Hands-on skills with ability to assemble, align and characterize operational performance, and troubleshoot lasers, including (but not limited to) laser resonators, amplifiers and associated optical sub-assemblies in support of R&D, laser technology maturation, and/or new product development activities

• Solid understanding of laser systems engineering

• Experience with numerical analysis using Matlab/Python or similar tool

• Working knowledge of laser laboratory protocol and test equipment including oscilloscopes, laser beam analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and/or laser drive electronics

• Understanding of geometrical optics, laser design engineering, and laser safety

• Current Top Secret clearance or equivalent
Desired Skills:
• Experience with design, assembly, integration and test of highly engineered space-qualified laser systems

• Model design solutions that can be fabricated for laboratory test and characterization prior to development

• Perform design trade studies and system verification analyses to optimize candidate system performance, cost, size and weight

• Able to prepare, conduct briefings and participate in technical and programmatic meetings with internal and external representatives

• Experience with assembly and test of non-linear optical wavelength conversion of lasers, such as harmonic generation, optical parametric conversion, or Raman

• Active TS/SCI clearance

Ability to Work Remotely: Onsite Full-time: The work associated with this position will be performed onsite at a designated Lockheed Martin facility.
Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Schedule for this Position: 9x80 every other Friday off
Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Washington or Washington DC is $109,500 - $209,900. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.

(Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.

This position is incentive plan eligible.
